 Gift of the Heart Kits

Church World Service distributes Gift of the Heart kits that can offer a ray of hope in the lives of refugees, displaced people, victims of natural disasters, and others living in desperate situations. The school, health, and baby kits described below provide vulnerable children and families with some of the basics they need, items we often take for granted. You can learn more about this organization at www.churchworldservice.org

In 2007, UCP donated 379 kits. (200 school, 173 health and 6 baby kits.) $758 was donated by the Women's Guild for postage.

For 2008, we have enough items to fill 200 school kits. 200 school bags are in varous stages of being completed. The call is out for health kits and baby kits.

There are three options for helping United Church of Penacook with the Gift of the Heart kits mission:

1.

Build complete kits to be dropped off in the Narthex.

  • Please include only the items listed.
  • Do not include personal notes, money or additional items.
  • Do not decorate with religious symbols as kits are shared with people based on need, regardless of their religion.
  • 2.  Donate items to be used in the assembling of kits by the Missions Committee.
    3.  Donate money to be used to purchase items in short supply and/or cover shipping charges.

Finished kits and individual items can be dropped off in the Gift of the Heart kits box located in the Narthex. All donations will need to be at the church by May 4th. Time is need to sort, box, weigh, and label the kits.

Health Kits can mean the difference between sickness and health for struggling families in the face of natural disasters, violence, or grinding poverty. A complete health kit contains the items below sealed in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure.
  • One hand towel (no fingertip or bath towels), measuring approximately 16" x 28"
  • One nail clipper*
  • One bar of soap (bath size in original wrapper)
  • One washcloth
  • One toothbrush** (in original packaging)
  • One wide-tooth comb
  • Six Band-Aids ®

*Metal nail files and emery boards are no longer accepted; nail clippers are now included in the health kit instead.
** Toothpaste is not longer included on this list because of problems with expiration dates. Toothpaste that has an extended expiration date will be added to Health Kit shipments by Church World Service just prior to shipment.

Baby Kits provide gentle warmth for infants and basic tools for young mothers struggling with poverty, inadequate housing or the consequences of natural disasters. A complete baby kit contains the items below wrapped inside one of the receiving blankets and secured with both diaper pins.   All items should be new. Patterns are available for many of the components.
  • Six cloth diapers (If cloth diapers aren't
available for purchase in your area, they
    can be found online
  • Two gowns or sleepers

  • Two diaper pins

  • One sweater or sweatshirt
  • Two t-shirts or undershirts (no onesies)
  • Two receiving blankets (one can be a hand-knitted or crocheted baby blanket)
  • Two washcloths

School Kits* give children in impoverished schools, refugee camps, or other difficult settings some of the basic tools for learning. A complete school kit contains the items below packed in the cloth bag.
  • Pair of blunt scissors
  • Assorted sheets of colored construction paper (12 sheets)
  • 12" (30cm) ruler - wood or plastic
  • Pads or notebooks of ruled 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Each kit should have 150 to 200 sheets total. Spiral notebooks are now accepted. No loose leaf or filler paper.

Please note that for the 2007-8 appeal, sufficient items have
been collected for kits being assembled by the Missions Committee.
