| The UCP steeple, the most recognizable feature of the church, is visible from all directions leading into the village of Penacook. This steeple with bell tower, clock, and spire reaches up with a celestial and hopeful gesture toward the sky. Even at night and into the early morning, the lights on the steeple act as a beacon for those heading home to Penacook. |
|
Unfortunately, the very majestic height that makes steeples so remarkable also makes them susceptible to damage from extreme temperatures, wind, rain, snow, and lightning. Many harsh New England winters and the punishment of hot summer days had played their part in reducing the glory of the UCP steeple. That classic New England look of a steeple-topped white church off the village green was sadly diminished.
Thus began the first major renovation project.

| Problems encountered: |
Prior to the steeple renovation, the electronics that run the clocks and the auto bell ringer were hit by lightning and had to be sent away for repair. The equipment was repaired but not re-installed because bad lightning grounds had to be fixed first. The steeplejack fixed the lightning cables as part of the renovation; the electronics have not been rewired yet. |
| Blessings realized: |
The contractor, Robert Morgan of Littleton, NH, received high praise from members of the Property Committee. This third-generation steeplejack, described as honest and trusting, was willing to set up a payment plan interest free. Mr. Morgan said he loved this work so much, he would do it for nothing if he didn't need to eat. This is apparent with the work he performed on the UCP steeple. |
